Strategy Matters

Chipotle is one of the most successful Mexican restaurant chains in the world. So successful is Chipotle that they have bounced back from a food contamination outbreak to reclaim their spot near the top of the fast food industry. Does anyone even remember that outbreak anymore?

There are many reasons for this comeback such as better food safety measures and strong marketing. But one reason for the comeback that doesn’t get a lot of attention is their decision to move their headquarters from Colorado to California. Chipotle did this in order to shift the culture of the company and bring them closer to their competitors, many of whom are headquartered on the west coast. This seemingly insignificant strategy has often proven to be beneficial in producing quality products and improving the bottom line (think Detroit and Silicon Valley).

Likewise, the traditional strategy of offshoring software talent to Asia has been giving way to nearshoring to countries such as Mexico. The talent pool in Mexico is large and deep as the universities and software companies of Mexico are producing high-level, experienced developers and engineers. Having a team in the same time zone as the company headquarters can bring a company to the next level.

Less Expensive Vs. Cost Effective_still-life-illustrating-ethics-concept

Less Expensive vs. Cost Effective

If you’ve ever remodeled your house, made a large repair on your car, or planned an elaborate vacation, you probably understand the difference between less expensive and cost effective. You may not want to buy those cheaper tires knowing that you’ll have to replace them much sooner and you’ll get lower gas mileage.

For decades, offshoring has been trending as a cost effective strategy in the software industry. But is it truly cost effective? Nearshoring has proven to be more cost effective than traditional offshoring or even onshoring. When you consider time zone differences, turnover rate, holiday schedule, workplace culture, and geographic proximity, you begin to get an idea of the cost effectiveness of nearshoring.

But cost effectiveness must also include high quality. Fortunately, Mexico has made a conscious effort to infuse and support the growth of tech industries within its borders and become a breeding ground for software engineers and software developers.

Great Things Are Done By A Team!_pexels-fauxels-3184418

Great things are done by a team!

Steve Jobs once said “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.” As powerful and innovative as they are, Disney did not build the Toy Story franchise alone. They teamed up with Pixar to create a ground-breaking work of art.

Recruiting quality talent is one of the most important components of business that can make or break the bottom line. As one recruiting firm strives to find the best talent for their clients, another can come alongside that firm and merge their resources to fulfill the needs of the client.

Crossbridge exists to team up with recruiters in using our resources in Mexico to find the top software developers with significant experience, high quality education, and a superb work ethic. Disney partnered with a company that had the expertise in the technology they desired to deliver an amazing product. Similarly, recruiting firms would be wise to consider partnering with those who have expertise in nearshoring to deliver amazing talent.

What’s The Difference Between A Customer And A Partner__business-people-shaking-hands-together

What’s the difference between a customer and a partner?

What’s the difference between a customer and a partner? Answer: There are many differences, but one key difference is that in a partnership, both parties will benefit monetarily. This is usually not the case in a business-customer relationship.

The market for recruiting software talent is very competitive. Often, recruiters do not have the resources to expand their pool to a lightly tapped market. Crossbridge partners with recruiting firms to acquire the best talent out of Mexico at competitive rates to ensure that their clients get the most bang for their buck. We have the resources and the infrastructure to present top level talent to our recruiting partners. Of all the industries that could benefit from the strategy of nearshoring, the recruiting industry is at or near the top of the list.

An Opportunity To Thrive!__krakenimages-376KN_ISplE-unsplash

An opportunity to thrive!

Restaurants have mobilized their waiters to provide curbside service and front door deliveries. Body products manufacturers are now producing hand sanitizer. And staff meetings have gone from the conference room to the computer screen. These things were not happening when we rang in the new year 10 months ago. Successful companies adapt when necessary or when there is an opportunity to not just to survive, but to thrive.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of software developers is projected to grow 22 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations.” This fact presents an opportunity for companies to adapt not just to survive, but to thrive. Economics 101 states that as demand increases, price increases. Fortunately, there is a plethora of high quality software talent located a short airplane ride away. Nearshoring allows for lower overhead costs and increased growth capacity without complicating logistics or sacrificing quality.

Covid The Catalyst_shahadat-rahman-BfrQnKBulYQ-unsplash

Covid the Catalyst

The story is told of a man who had always planned on getting to work on that project in the backyard, but he just never had the time because of his busy schedule. Covid changed that, and he was able to use the extra time he had to finally get to work on and finish the project. It probably would have gotten done anyway, but Covid sped up the process. He even had time to make some wonderful additions to the finished product.

We are hearing a lot of tech companies say that they have always thought about the idea of nearshoring, they just never got around to it because they were content in the position they were in and didn’t have the resources to consider making any changes. Covid has changed that with tighter budgets and remote work being so prevalent. There is now ample incentive to investigate new strategies such as nearshoring, and some organizations are saying that they will never go back to their old strategy. Nearshoring helps with overhead costs while avoiding the complications that can arise from traditional offshoring.

The New Economy_ruthson-zimmerman-FVwG5OzPuzo-unsplash

The New Economy

The world economy has never changed more rapidly than in 2020. Regal Cinemas has announced that they will be closing all 536 locations, while streaming services are having a banner year. Although we are in the midst of significant recession due to the pandemic, housing prices are skyrocketing because of low interest rates. Retailers can’t put bicycles on their shelves fast enough. And one of the biggest companies in the world, Disney, has been unable to open some of their theme parks. Unprecedented numbers of restaurants are closing every day, while grocery sales are sharply higher than last year.

In this unrecognizable economy, another significant change that has occurred is that so much business is now being done remotely. From our meetings on Zoom to our increase in online transactions, many key components of our industries are looking very different. Software development is no exception. Certain sectors of the tech industry who would never have considered going remote have been forced to adapt to a remote model in order to stay competitive. There has never been a better time to explore the concept of nearshoring remote developers as a way to adapt to our new economy.

Don’t Hesitate!_portrait-frowning-young-attractive-african-american-thinking-boy-sits-cafe-works-laptop-touches-cheek-sadly-looks-up-thinks-about-deadline

Don’t hesitate!

Mexico’s current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been leading the country to increase its investment in higher education by building new universities and making colleges accessible to more people. Consequently, Mexico has been producing unprecedented numbers of professionals, including engineers and software developers. With a deeper pool of talent comes a higher level of talent. Considering so much tech work is remote these days, organizations from all over the world can tap into this talent pool and develop mutually beneficial relationships with companies that connect talent with opportunities.

When Blockbuster was faced with the opportunity to get into the business of streaming movies, their hesitation cost them dearly and ultimately led to their demise. To ignore the ever-increasing pool of talent just on the other side of the border is akin to playing a game of Russian Roulette. While nearshoring may not be a good fit in every situation, it is wise to at least investigate its potential.

What Happens When The Talent Pool Deepens__pensive-businesswoman-thinking-about-problem

What happens when the talent pool deepens?

A local high school of about 2,000 students always did well in numerous competitions: football, baseball, basketball, even in academic & debate competitions. Although they usually matched up well with the other schools in the area, there was a perpetual thorn in their side in the form of another school that was consistently rolling over the competition. Why was this school so dominant? Because they had twice the number of students, and therefore, had a deeper pool of talent.

While there is an extensive amount of software talent in the United States, there is also intense competition for that talent. And while the number of US software developers in 2019 was estimated at 4.2 million, the international talent pool is known to be exponentially larger. Some companies balk at recruiting offshore talent from other continents because it can present potential complications pertaining to the bottom line. However, the use of nearshore talent mitigates or even eliminates these complications, thereby protecting not just the bottom line, but also an organization’s efficiency & competitiveness.

Adapt Or Die_thisisengineering-raeng-uOhBxB23Wao-unsplash

Adapt or die

Beginning last Spring, companies have had to adapt their business systems and processes in unprecedented ways. Remote work has become the new normal for many workers, and software development is no exception. According to forbes.com, “software development is supposed to be a highly adaptive and agile process. But the pandemic has brought the need for adaptability to a completely new level.”

Times like this are the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate our systems and see where we can improve the way we do things. With so much tech work being done remotely nowadays, there is not a better time to think outside the box with regards to our teams and the projects they are working on. Factors such as communication, efficiency, workplace culture, and loyalty are key elements that must be carefully considered. And each organization will answer questions about these elements in their own unique way as it relates to their goals, financial standing, and their existing systems.
